RFQ Checklist for Custom Metal Stamping: What to Send and What to Ask

A complete RFQ package shortens quoting time and reduces the risk of a price that later changes. Most delays in custom stamping come from missing data, not from the supplier's pricing process.
Below is a practical checklist for the data to send and the questions to ask. It is written for buyers who want comparable quotes from several stamping suppliers.
What to include in the RFQ
- 2D drawing with dimensions, tolerances, material, thickness, surface finish and critical characteristics.
- 3D model in STEP, IGES or native format, especially for formed or drawn parts.
- Material and temper, including any approved alternatives.
- Annual volume and batch size, plus expected ramp-up.
- Finish: plating, passivation, anodizing, powder coating or none.
- Inspection standard: full dimensions, AQL sampling or critical dimensions only.
- Packaging: bulk, tray, reel or custom.
- Delivery terms: Incoterms, destination and target date.
- Target price if you have one, and the assumptions behind it.
What to ask the supplier
| Topic | Question |
|---|---|
| Process | Which process and how many stations? |
| Tooling | Tool cost, ownership, maintenance and transfer |
| Samples | Sample lead time and sample cost |
| Production | Mass-production lead time and MOQ |
| Price breaks | Unit price at 1k, 10k, 50k and 100k pcs |
| Quality | FAI report, material certs, control plan |
| Payment | Deposit, balance, currency |
| Shipping | Incoterms, packaging, freight estimate |
Common RFQ mistakes
- Sending only a PDF with no tolerances on critical features.
- Not stating annual volume, which makes tooling amortization impossible to judge.
- Asking for a unit price without defining the inspection standard.
- Omitting the surface finish, then discovering the price excluded plating.
- Changing the drawing after the quote without updating the assumptions.
FAQ
Is a 3D model always required?
For flat parts, a dimensioned 2D drawing may be enough. For drawn or complex formed parts, a 3D model reduces interpretation risk.
How long should a quote take?
For a clear RFQ, a first quote is often possible within 1-3 business days. Complex draws or assemblies may need longer.
Can I get a quote before sharing full drawings?
You can share a simplified outline for a rough range, but a firm price requires the full drawing and volume data.
