Burr Control in Metal Stamping: Causes, Prevention and Inspection

Burr Control in Metal Stamping: Causes, Prevention and Inspection

Burr is a normal result of shearing metal. The goal is not always zero burr; it is a controlled burr that meets the drawing and does not affect assembly, safety or appearance.

This article explains where burr comes from, how to reduce it at the die and how to choose a deburring method.

What causes burr

  • Die clearance: too much or too little clearance changes the fracture pattern.
  • Tool wear: a dull punch or die increases burr height.
  • Material: ductile materials can produce a longer burr.
  • Lubrication: poor lubrication increases friction and wear.
  • Die alignment: misalignment creates uneven burr on opposite sides.

Reduce burr at the die

  • Set clearance according to material and thickness.
  • Keep punches and dies sharp; define a sharpening interval.
  • Use a proper die coating and lubrication.
  • Consider a reverse-punch or shaving station for critical edges.
  • Check die alignment and guide wear regularly.

Deburring methods

MethodBest forNotes
Vibratory finishingSmall parts, bulkUniform edge rounding; may affect surface
TumblingSimple shapesLow cost; limited access to recesses
BrushingLocal burr removalManual or automated; consistent only with control
ElectropolishingStainless and clean partsImproves surface; requires bath control
Chemical deburringComplex shapesUniform but process-sensitive

Inspection

Burr height can be checked with a profile projector, a microscope with a scale, or a burr-height gauge. For high-volume parts, a visual standard with a limit sample is often used alongside measurement.

Specify it clearly: "Burr max 0.05 mm on the die side, no burr on the contact surface" is a usable requirement. "No burr" is difficult to measure and often leads to disagreement.

FAQ

Can stamping produce a burr-free edge?

It can be very small, but a truly burr-free sheared edge usually requires additional processing such as shaving, machining or electropolishing.

Does deburring change dimensions?

It can remove a small amount of material. If a dimension is critical, deburring should be included in the process capability study.

Which side has the burr?

The burr normally forms on the die side, opposite the punch entry side. The drawing should state which side is acceptable.
